Japanese knotweed in Hampshire
Hampshire is known for its chalk streams, including the Test and the Itchen, as well as rivers such as the Meon, the Hamble and the Avon. Knotweed on a riverbank can spread downstream when fragments break off, so riverside stands need careful planning.
In gardens and on residential boundaries, the aim is usually to stop the spread, protect paths, walls and outbuildings, and get the paperwork in place for a future sale. We recommend herbicide treatment, stem injection, excavation or a combination, depending on the site.
Rivers, waste and the rules
Treating knotweed on a riverbank needs approved products and, in England, the Environment Agency's agreement. Some Hampshire rivers, such as the Itchen, are also protected sites, which can mean extra consent is needed from Natural England.
