Bamboo in Surrey gardens

Many Surrey gardens are long-established, and bamboo was a popular choice for screening along fences and boundaries. The trouble usually starts years later, when running types send rhizomes under the lawn or into next door. By the time new canes appear in the middle of the grass, the network below ground is usually far bigger than the stand you can see.

We work from the Thames-side towns in the north of the county down to the Surrey Hills. Every job starts with a free in-person survey, so we can see how far the rhizomes have spread before we give you a fixed price.

Ground conditions in Surrey

Surrey's ground changes a lot over a short distance: chalk on the North Downs, heavy Weald clay in the south and sandy soils in the west around Woking and Camberley. It affects how a job is done. Clay is heavy and slow to dig and sieve, especially when it is wet, while light, sandy soil is quicker to screen for stray rhizomes. We plan the method, the screening and the waste around what we find at the survey.

Coming from next door?

Bamboo does not stop at the fence

Running bamboo sends rhizomes under fences and gravel boards, and a dense root mat can build up along the boundary. We dig out what has come through and can fit a root barrier along the boundary to help stop it coming back.

FAQ

Questions from Surrey

Straight answers. Anything else, just ask.

Do you cover my town in Surrey?

We work across Surrey, including Guildford, Woking, Epsom, Reigate, Redhill, Dorking, Leatherhead and Cobham. Send your postcode with your enquiry and we will confirm.

My Surrey garden only has narrow side access. Can you still dig the bamboo out?

Yes. Where a mini digger cannot get in, the work is done by hand. Access is one of the things we look at during the free survey, and it is reflected in the fixed price quotation, plus VAT.

Is the survey really free?

Yes. We visit in person, identify the species and send you a written report with photos and a fixed price quotation, with no obligation. Formal CSJK (Certified Surveyor of Japanese Knotweed) survey reports, which confirm whether invasive plants are present (for example for a property sale or mortgage), are £240 (£200 + VAT).

The bamboo is coming from next door. What can you do?

First, we'll come round for a free survey and give you a report you can share with your neighbours to get things started. Then we can quote for two options: defending your boundary with a root barrier on your side, or working across the boundary to remove the bamboo at the source, if your neighbours give permission.

Are your prices fixed?

Yes. Quotations are fixed price, plus VAT, with no hidden fees or subscriptions.

How do you keep your prices competitive?

We are a lean, owner-led team with no national overheads or call centres. Your site is surveyed in person by a qualified surveyor, we use recognised methods, and every job comes with a written guarantee and management plan. Every quote is fixed, plus VAT, after a free survey.
