The plant spreads rapidly through it's underground rhizome systems, able to penetrate through foundations, paving, drains and cause major structural damage. These risks can lead to neighbouring boundary disputes of encroachment, and also hinder property sales as buyers and lenders view the risk as similar to Japanese Knotweed.

Bamboo out competes native plants, reducing biodiversity and causing ecological destruction.
