Japanese knotweed in Berkshire
The Thames, the Kennet, the Loddon and the Pang all run through Berkshire. Knotweed along riverbanks and floodplains can spread when fragments are carried by water or moved in soil. In gardens, it is often found along boundaries, behind sheds and in neglected corners.
If you are buying in Berkshire and the survey mentions knotweed, ask which RICS management category the surveyor gave it. Categories A and B usually need a specialist inspection, while C and D may not need further action for a mortgage. See our selling or buying a house page.
What to look out for
Flooding can move knotweed fragments onto new ground. If your garden floods or backs onto a river, keep an eye out for red-purple shoots in spring, and send us a photo if you are not sure.
