What is Virginia creeper?
Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) and false Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus inserta) are fast-growing climbers from North America, known for their bright red autumn leaves.
They climb walls and fences, can work their way into gutters, under roof tiles and around windows, and spread by seed and by stems that root along the ground.
How to recognise it
- Climbing vine with leaves made of five leaflets
- Leaves turn bright red in autumn
- Small dark blue berries
- Tendrils, often with sticky pads, that cling to walls
Why it needs dealing with
Early action avoids further spread, damage, stress and cost.
It gets into the house
Stems can get into gutters, under tiles and around window frames.
Removal can mark walls
Pulling it off roughly can leave marks or damage weak render and pointing.
It regrows from the roots
Cutting it at the base alone usually leads to regrowth.

Is there a law about it?
Virginia creeper and false Virginia creeper are both listed on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 in England and Wales, which makes it an offence to plant them or otherwise cause them to grow in the wild. Having it on your house is not in itself an offence, but cuttings and roots should be disposed of responsibly.

Will removing Virginia creeper damage my wall?
It can leave marks, especially on weak render or pointing. We take it down carefully and will point out any issues we find.
Can I keep it on my house?
Having it is not in itself an offence. If you want it removed, or it is getting into gutters and roofs, we can help.
Is the survey really free?
Yes. We visit in person, identify the species and send you a written report with photos and a fixed price quotation, with no obligation. Formal CSJK (Certified Surveyor of Japanese Knotweed) survey reports, which confirm whether invasive plants are present (for example for a property sale or mortgage), are £240 (£200 + VAT).
