What is three-cornered garlic?
Three-cornered garlic (Allium triquetrum), sometimes called three-cornered leek, is a bulb from the Mediterranean that flowers in spring. It spreads by seed and by small bulbs that are easily moved in soil.
It forms dense clumps that crowd out other spring plants, and it is often spread by moving soil or garden waste.
How to recognise it
- Stems that are triangular in cross-section
- White, bell-shaped flowers with a thin green stripe, in spring
- Long, narrow, strap-like leaves
- A strong garlic or onion smell when crushed

Why it needs dealing with
Early action avoids further spread, damage, stress and cost.
Bulbs spread easily
Small bulbs are moved around in soil, on tools and in garden waste.
It crowds out other plants
Dense clumps can smother spring flowers and borders.
It returns each spring
Any bulbs left behind come back the following year.

Is there a law about it?
Three-cornered garlic is listed on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 in England and Wales, which makes it an offence to plant it or otherwise cause it to grow in the wild. Having it in your garden is not in itself an offence, but cuttings, roots and soil containing it should be disposed of responsibly.
