What is Rhododendron ponticum?
Rhododendron ponticum is an evergreen shrub with purple flowers in late spring. It was widely planted in estates and woodland, and it now spreads by seed and by rooting where its branches touch the ground.
Dense thickets block out light, so little else can grow beneath them. It can also host plant diseases such as Phytophthora ramorum.
How to recognise it
- Large evergreen shrub forming dense thickets
- Dark green, leathery, oval leaves
- Mauve to purple flowers in late spring
- Branches that root where they touch the ground

Why it needs dealing with
Early action avoids further spread, damage, stress and cost.
It shades everything out
Dense thickets stop other plants growing underneath.
It can host plant disease
It can carry diseases such as Phytophthora ramorum that affect other plants.
It regrows
Cut stumps resprout and seedlings appear unless the site is followed up.

Is there a law about it?
Rhododendron ponticum (and its hybrid with R. maximum) is listed on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 in England and Wales, which makes it an offence to plant it or otherwise cause it to grow in the wild. Having it in your garden is not in itself an offence, but cut material should be disposed of responsibly.

Can you remove large areas of rhododendron?
Yes. Send us photos or book a free survey and we will recommend an approach based on access and the size of the area.
Will it grow back after cutting?

Is the survey really free?
Yes. We visit in person, identify the species and send you a written report with photos and a fixed price quotation, with no obligation. Formal CSJK (Certified Surveyor of Japanese Knotweed) survey reports, which confirm whether invasive plants are present (for example for a property sale or mortgage), are ยฃ240 (ยฃ200 + VAT).
Are your prices fixed?
Yes. Quotations are fixed price, plus VAT, with no hidden fees or subscriptions.
Can I just send a photo?
Yes. Add a photo to the enquiry form or send it on WhatsApp and we will identify the plant for free.
How do you keep your prices competitive?
We are a lean, owner-led team with no national overheads or call centres. Your site is surveyed in person by a qualified surveyor, we use recognised methods, and every job comes with a written guarantee and management plan. Every quote is fixed, plus VAT, after a free survey.
