Which knotweeds are these?
Giant knotweed is a larger relative of Japanese knotweed, with much bigger leaves. Bohemian knotweed is a hybrid of the two, and it is common in the UK. Himalayan knotweed is a different species with long, narrow, pointed leaves.
All of them spread from underground rhizomes, so cutting the stems down does not get rid of them. Because they look alike, a proper identification is the first step.
How to recognise it
- Giant knotweed: very tall, with large, heart-shaped leaves
- Bohemian knotweed: in between the two, and variable
- Himalayan knotweed: long, narrow, pointed leaves, often in large clumps
- All: bamboo-like stems and spreading underground rhizomes

Why it needs dealing with
Early action avoids further spread, damage, stress and cost.
Rhizomes regrow
Small fragments of rhizome can regrow, so removal needs a specialist approach.
It can affect a sale
Buyers and lenders may treat other knotweeds in a similar way to Japanese knotweed. Paperwork helps.
It crosses boundaries
Like Japanese knotweed, it can spread into neighbouring gardens.

Is there a law about it?
Giant knotweed and hybrid (Bohemian) knotweed are listed on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 in England and Wales, alongside Japanese knotweed, which makes it an offence to plant them or otherwise cause them to grow in the wild. Himalayan knotweed is not listed on Schedule 9, but it is still invasive and should be dealt with and disposed of responsibly.
