What is hemlock?
Hemlock is a common name used for more than one highly poisonous plant in the UK. They belong to the same family as cow parsley and have white, umbrella-shaped flower heads, which makes them easy to mistake for something harmless.
Hemlock turns up in overgrown gardens, on rough ground and in damp places such as ditches and riverbanks.
How to recognise it
- Tall, branching plants, often taller than an adult
- Hollow stems, which on some hemlock plants have purple blotches, spots or colouring
- Finely divided, fern-like leaves
- Small white flowers in umbrella-shaped clusters in summer

Why it needs dealing with
Early action avoids further spread, damage, stress and cost.
All parts are toxic
Hemlock is poisonous if eaten, and the sap can irritate some people's skin.
Pets and livestock
Children, dogs, horses and livestock are all at risk where it grows.
Easy to misidentify
It looks like several harmless plants, so get it identified before anyone handles it.
How we deal with hemlock
From the free survey to a guaranteed result, in four steps.
Free survey
In person. Plant identified, written report with photos and a fixed price quotation, plus VAT.
Your plan
We identify the plant first, because the right approach depends on the site, especially near water. Removal is carried out in protective clothing using careful excavation, herbicide treatment where suitable, or both. Herbicide work is carried out by City & Guilds PA1/PA6 qualified operatives.
3The work
Biosecurity measures on site. Waste removed by a registered waste carrier.
4Guarantee & follow-up
Minimum 5-year guarantee included, available for up to 20 years, plus follow-up visits.
From our jobs

Is there a law about it?
Hemlock is not listed on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, so the rules that apply to plants such as Japanese knotweed do not apply in the same way. It still makes sense to dispose of it responsibly. It is a native plant, and it is not on the UK list of invasive alien species of special concern that covers plants such as giant hogweed.
