What is cotoneaster?
Cotoneasters are shrubs that are widely planted in gardens for their berries. Birds eat the berries and spread the seed, so some species escape into the wild, where they can take over cliffs, limestone grassland and heathland.
There are many types of cotoneaster, and only some are listed as invasive. Five species are listed on Schedule 9, including wall cotoneaster (Cotoneaster horizontalis), a common garden plant.
How to recognise it
- Woody shrubs, some low and spreading, some upright
- Wall cotoneaster: flat, herringbone-pattern branches, often trained against walls
- Small leaves and small pink or white flowers
- Red berries in autumn, eaten by birds

Why it needs dealing with
Early action avoids further spread, damage, stress and cost.
Birds spread it
Berries are carried away by birds, so garden plants can seed into the wild.
It takes over habitats
Escaped cotoneaster can smother important habitats such as limestone grassland.
Roots regrow
Cutting it back alone often leads to regrowth from the base.
How we deal with cotoneaster
From the free survey to a guaranteed result, in four steps.
Free survey
In person. Plant identified, written report with photos and a fixed price quotation, plus VAT.
Your plan
We identify the species, then cut the shrub down and dig out the root system, or treat the stumps where that suits the site better. We aim to remove it before the berries ripen.
3The work
Biosecurity measures on site. Waste removed by a registered waste carrier.
4Guarantee & follow-up
Minimum 5-year guarantee included, available for up to 20 years, plus follow-up visits.
Is there a law about it?
Five cotoneaster species are listed on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 in England and Wales: wall cotoneaster (C. horizontalis), entire-leaved cotoneaster (C. integrifolius), Himalayan cotoneaster (C. simonsii), hollyberry cotoneaster (C. bullatus) and small-leaved cotoneaster (C. microphyllus). That makes it an offence to plant them or otherwise cause them to grow in the wild. Having one in your garden is not in itself an offence, but cuttings and roots should be disposed of responsibly.
