What is buddleia?
Buddleia, or butterfly bush, is a fast-growing shrub with long purple flower spikes. It is popular with butterflies, but it spreads by huge numbers of light seeds that blow into walls, roofs and wasteland.
Self-seeded buddleia in masonry can widen cracks as it grows, and cutting it back alone usually leads to regrowth.
How to recognise it
- Shrub with long, cone-shaped flower spikes, usually purple
- Long, pointed leaves, dark green above and pale underneath
- Arching branches
- Self-seeded plants growing from walls, chimneys and gutters

Why it needs dealing with
Early action avoids further spread, damage, stress and cost.

Seeds spread by wind

Is there a law about it?
Buddleia is not listed on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, so the rules that apply to plants such as Japanese knotweed do not apply in the same way. It still makes sense to dispose of it responsibly. If you want to keep a garden buddleia, deadheading it before it sets seed helps stop it spreading.
